How Strong Customer Authentication (SCA) requirements apply to the Bitrefill Card

  • Updated

As a result of new EU regulations, the way that you deposit funds to and use your Bitrefill Card is changing. Both the new EU Transfer of Funds Regulation (TFR) and Strong Customer Authentication (SCA) requirements will apply to the Bitrefill Card from July 2026 onwards.

Read on below to understand how the new SCA requirements will strengthen the security of your Bitrefill Card:

Logging onto the Bitrefill Card

From July 2026 onwards, you will be required to set up a new two-factor authentication (2FA) for your Bitrefill Card. Every 180 days you will be required to input the 2FA code to access your card.

Viewing transactions older than 90 days

Every time you want to view your transaction history beyond 90 days in the past, you will need to pass a 2FA check to do so.

Depositing funds to your Bitrefill Card

When depositing funds to your Bitrefill Card, the first time you deposit a specific cryptocurrency (e.g. Bitcoin via the Lightning Network) you will be required to pass a 2FA code and/or input a code sent via SMS to your mobile number associated with the card. This will only be required the first time you deposit with that specific cryptocurrency type and not again.

Withdrawing funds from your card via SEPA

When withdrawing funds from your card via bank transfer to a bank account in your name, you will be required to input a code sent via SMS to your mobile number associated with the card.
