How Transfer of Funds Regulations (TFR) apply to the Bitrefill Card

  • Updated

As a result of new EU regulations, the way that you deposit funds to and use your Bitrefill Card is changing. Both the new EU Transfer of Funds Regulation (TFR) and Strong Customer Authentication (SCA) requirements will apply to the Bitrefill Card from July 2026 onwards.

Before sending cryptocurrency to your Bitrefill Card, you will need to open our website or app, press ‘Add Funds’, and follow the instructions provided to you. You will need to provide information regarding where you are transferring the funds from as follows:

Sending cryptocurrency from your own wallet

  • Under €1,000: You will just need to confirm the address you are sending your cryptocurrency from.
  • Over €1,000: You will need to verify that you own the wallet address via a liveness check or wallet signature. This process will be completed within the Bitrefill app or website.

Sending cryptocurrency from a licensed VASP

(A Virtual Asset Services Provider (VASP) in this context is a company licensed to handle cryptocurrency trading, custody, and more on behalf of their customers in the EU. Examples include Coinbase and Kraken).

  • When depositing from a VASP, you will be required to declare which provider you are sending the funds from.

Sending cryptocurrency from another third party

  • Under €1,000: You do not need to perform any form of verification.
  • Over €1,000: Deposits from wallets that are not your own or that do not belong to an EU licensed VASP are not permitted under the new regulatory framework and therefore will be declined.
